All my life I have drawn and stitched, in my teens studying Printed Textiles and Painting at Sheffield College of Art. The colours and forms used in printed textiles appealed; however, they did not allow me to continue to explore stitch. Drawing was always very important but painting failed to excite. Years later, after a visit to an exhibition of creative embroidery, the realisation dawned as to how stitch could be integrated into future work. Studying City & Guilds part 1 & 2 at college it was apparent that a creative pathway would not include formal embroidery stitch.

Eventually my way of working has become more clear using mostly found recycled materials, plastics, paper bags, handmade papers, fabric, labels and more in conjunction with paint, dye, oil pastels, textured paint, wax etc. For a long time trying to achieve a transparent quality has been paramount. By layering transparent and translucent materials, paper and plastics with applied stitch, hand and machine, also embellishments i.e. glitter, beads, sequins and buttons
