Heather Hancock
I have always loved to draw, inspired initially as a young child by watching my father, who spent hours working on technical, measured drawings. Later at Art School I stood fascinated with my whole class watching our tutor Geoff Yeomans complete a virtuoso life drawing, a brilliant eye.
I also remember vividly visits to my aunt’s house in Yorkshire, where hand embroidered cushions delighted my child's imagination, as I followed her colourful stitches with my fingers.
I like to work across a range of media, playing with line, watercolour, machine stitch and hand embroidery, to probe, to discover new combinations of processes to develop my work. Exploring the relationship between image and object is key.
My practice is currently centred around a menagerie of creatures, which I have made and collected over several years.
The creatures serve as prompts and inspiration for my work, either on their own or in still life arrangements. They have an anthropomorphic quality which suggest a sense of drama or humour.
