Liz Smith

MA (Art and Design)

I have spent most of my professional life teaching art, design and textiles in secondary and higher education. Inspiration for my work comes from a variety of sources within the natural environment. I am fascinated by the way in which basic utility stitches cross time, place and culture and resurface in many creative forms from Indian kantha to Japanese boro back to traditional English quilts. This directly influences my working methods and I employ simple hand stitching techniques using recycled natural fibre fabrics and threads wherever possible. I like the feel and handle this brings to my work. Drawing is my life blood, acts as a starting point and almost always underpins my subsequent textile outcomes.
